From humble beginnings

TOMOS was founded in 1954 in Slovenia, beginning as a small manufacturer of lightweight motorcycles. The name itself stands for TOvarna MOtornih koles Sežana (Motorcycle Factory Sežana), reflecting our proud manufacturing heritage.

What started as a modest operation quickly grew into a respected brand known for reliability, affordability, and thoughtful design. These core values continue to drive our innovation today as we’ve evolved into the electric mobility space.

Our journey through the decades

The birth of innovation

Tomos began with the TOMOS Puch SG 250 motorcycle in 1955, producing 137 motorcycles alongside 124 scooters and 100 mopeds. By the following year, mopeds dominated production with 1,712 units. While initially manufacturing licensed Puch designs, Tomos quickly began developing its own original models, setting the foundation for decades of innovation.

1960s
Automotive adventures

Starting in 1959, Tomos diversified by producing Citroën automobiles under license at the Koper plant. Local manufacturing included models like the Ami 8, 2CV6, GS, and the Citroën Dyane (marketed as Diana), allowing access to Yugoslavia's closed automotive market while also importing premium Citroën models for domestic consumers.

1970s
Environmental evolution

Facing new environmental regulations, Tomos dedicated the 1980s to modernizing its entire two-wheeler range. The company focused on reducing noise and emissions while enhancing rider comfort and updating designs. During this period, Tomos also expanded in the Netherlands by selling Sparta-manufactured bicycles under the Tomos brand.

1990s
European integration

Slovenia's 2004 admission to the European Union brought new opportunities for Tomos, including a contract with BMW to produce component parts. The period saw exciting new models like the MC Off-Road Line, Revival, and Streetmate. In 2006, Tomos upgraded to the A55 engine with lighter components and improved power while meeting stricter emissions standards.

2010s
The E.Motion revolution

TOMOS launches its groundbreaking E.MOTION range, applying decades of mobility expertise to create innovative electric vehicles. From electric bikes to transport solutions, TOMOS is once again at the forefront of a mobility revolution.

1950s
International expansion

The 1960s marked Tomos's most productive era and crucial expansion beyond Yugoslavia. The Netherlands became a vital market, leading to the establishment of Tomos's only foreign factory there in 1966. This Dutch facility served as both production center and R&D hub until 2009, with the Netherlands remaining Tomos's strongest market to this day.

1960s-1970s
Youth revolution

Rising living standards in the 1970s helped Tomos capture the growing youth market with popular automatics and mopeds like the A-OS, A-ON, and APN models. Special variants featured raised handlebars, supportive seats, and chrome details. By 1973, all Tomos vehicles featured in-house manufactured engines, culminating in the powerful Colibri 15.

1980s
American advancement

The 1990s introduced significant models including the Sprint, Targa, and Targa LX (later TOMOS ST and LX). This decade marked the debut of the innovative A35 engine and the establishment of Tomos USA in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with an impressive 24,000 square foot facility targeting the growing American market.

2000s
Classic revival

Tomos returned to the US market in 2019 with two new mopeds blending heritage with innovation. The redesigned Sprint incorporated classic design elements honoring the brand's history, while the all-new Racing TT represented Tomos's vision for the future, demonstrating the enduring appeal of this iconic brand.
